Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to us. We provide this policy explaining our online information practices and the choices you can make about the information you share with us. The policy also expresses the care with which we treat your personal information. The Institution of Engineering and Technology is committed to respecting your privacy and recognizes your need for appropriate protection and management of personally identifiable information you share with us.

Collection of Information

When browsing the free areas of the IET Digital Library, we log your IP address (the Internet address of your computer), in our server logs. However we do not link your IP address to anything personally identifiable. We log what country you are accessing the IET Digital Library from, and what time and date you visited. Other information automatically provided to us is the type of computer and operating system and web browser you are using. We use this information from our server logs to provide technical support and so that we can continue to develop new features which are supported by your computer and web browser. The logged information also helps us identify overall usage patterns and trends on the site.

When visiting a subscription controlled area of the IET Digital Library, if you are accessing the site from a subscribing institution, you will be automatically logged in. In this case, we will continue to log your site activity and IP address. If you are not accessing the site from a subscribing institution you will be prompted for a username and password, the first time, in a browser session, that you attempt to access a subscription controlled area of the IET Digital Library.

Username and password access to the IET Digital Library is granted to registered subscribers. Information collected during the registration process may include your name, e-mail address, street address, job title, society membership, country, or other related demographic information.

Notice to EU Users: The IET Digital Library is hosted in the United States. By entering information on this site, you are consenting to the transfer of that information to the United States. Your information will be handled in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Credit Card Information

We use one or more outside credit card processing companies to bill users for single article purchases and we will disclose your personally identifiable information to these companies to process your orders and to provide customer service support. We do not store your credit card information.

What is a Cookie? A cookie is a small file that a web site stores on the user’s computer, which does not collect personal information but sometimes links to personally identifiable information about the user. Cookies can only store data provided by the server or generated by an explicit user action. Only the site that provides them can read them. Most Web browsers can be configured to provide notification when cookies arrive and ask for approval to accept them, or to refuse cookies outright. Most browsers can also delete cookies that have been accepted in the past.

The IET Digital Library uses session cookies which are designed not to be permanent or persistent. They are used to create a “session” based on your access privileges, and to close the session after 15 minutes of inactivity. The session cookie is designed so that, once you close your browser, the cookie will simply terminate. If you configure your browser to reject cookies, you may still use some, but not all, portions of the IEE Digital Library. For example, registering for personal services requires that your browser accept cookies. We recommend closing browsers on publicly available machines (such as those in libraries) after use.

Except for the purposes of law enforcement, regulation or legal proceedings, or with your explicit permission, the Institution of Engineering and Technology will not give or sell its members’ and other contacts’ personal information to third parties.

This site has security measures in place to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under our control. We have taken the necessary steps to provide a secure server for transmission of sensitive data to and from our site, including your login and password. We encrypt all data (including your credit card number) transmitted through our secure Web server so no one else can read it.

Questions and comments

If you require a copy of the personal data that the Institution holds about you, please make a written request to the Data Protection Officer at the Institution’s business address. You should include your name, address and telephone number, and membership number if you have one. The Institution may charge a fee of £10 for responding to an access request. Please also contact the Data Protection Officer if you would like further information about this policy, or are concerned about the security of your personal data.

Updates to this policy

The privacy of Institution members, subscribers and visitors to the IET Digital Library is important to the Institution. In line with industry best practice, this policy will be kept under continual review, and any changes made from time to time will be posted on this page.
